About Henry Pumps

Henry Pumps Ltd is a specialist supplier of pumps, pumping equipment and engineered water management solutions to commercial, industrial, trade and domestic customers across the UK.

We supply across sectors including construction, civils, drainage, utilities, facilities management, agriculture, wastewater, flood response, borehole water supply, pressure boosting, fuel transfer and general water management.

Our customers often need fast, accurate and practical advice. Sometimes they know exactly what they want. Often, they do not. A key part of our role is helping them select the right pump, understand the right solution and avoid costly mistakes.

As the business continues to grow, we are looking to strengthen our technical sales capability with someone who can operate at a high level from the outset.

The Role

The Technical Sales Engineer will be responsible for handling inbound technical enquiries, advising customers, selecting suitable pumps and associated equipment, producing quotations and helping convert opportunities into profitable sales.

You will work internally as part of the sales team, supporting customers by phone and email, while also working closely with suppliers, warehouse, administration and management.

The role requires strong product knowledge, commercial awareness and the ability to work at pace in a busy technical sales environment.

You will be expected to understand customer applications, identify the correct solution, quote accurately, follow up professionally and help the business maintain a high standard of technical advice.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Sales and Customer Support

You will handle technical enquiries from trade, commercial, industrial and domestic customers.

You will be expected to:

  • Speak confidently with customers about pump applications.
  • Understand what the customer is trying to achieve.
  • Ask the right technical questions before recommending a product.
  • Select suitable pumps, control equipment, hose, fittings and accessories.
  • Produce accurate quotations quickly and professionally.
  • Explain product suitability clearly.
  • Identify when a customer needs a standard product, a package, or a more engineered solution.
  • Support customers with technical queries before and after purchase.
  • Help convert enquiries into profitable orders.

Product Selection and Application Knowledge

This role requires strong existing knowledge of pumps and pumping applications.

Relevant experience may include:

  • Submersible drainage pumps.
  • Sewage and wastewater pumps.
  • Puddle pumps and flood response pumps.
  • Booster pumps and pressure systems.
  • Borehole and well pumps.
  • Surface mounted pumps.
  • Engine-driven pumps.
  • Site dewatering equipment.
  • Control panels, floats, sensors and automation.
  • Hose, fittings, valves and accessories.
  • Pump stations, chambers or packaged systems.
  • Industrial, construction, civils, utilities, drainage, agriculture or water management applications.

You do not need to know every product we sell on day one, but you must have enough pump industry experience to understand the principles immediately and become effective very quickly.

Quoting, Pricing and Commercial Judgement

You will be responsible for producing clear, accurate and commercially sensible quotations.

You will be expected to:

  • Quote the right product for the application.
  • Consider margin, availability and suitability.
  • Avoid unnecessary discounting.
  • Upsell relevant accessories and add-ons.
  • Identify higher-value opportunities.
  • Follow up quotations properly.
  • Keep the CRM updated with accurate notes and next actions.
  • Balance excellent customer service with strong commercial judgement.

We are not looking for someone who simply takes orders. We need someone who can add technical value, protect margin and help customers make the right buying decision.

Supplier and Team Support

You will work closely with key suppliers and internal colleagues.

This may include:

  • Liaising with suppliers on technical selections.
  • Checking product availability and lead times.
  • Supporting the sales team with more complex technical enquiries.
  • Feeding product knowledge back into the business.
  • Helping improve technical standards across the team.
  • Supporting new product ranges and engineered solutions.
  • Sharing market and customer insight with management.

The right person will become a trusted technical point of contact within the business.

The Person We Are Looking For

We are looking for a highly capable, experienced and commercially aware pump professional.

The ideal person will be:

  • Technically strong.
  • Confident speaking to customers.
  • Experienced in pump selection.
  • Accurate with quotations.
  • Commercially aware.
  • Practical and solutions-focused.
  • Organised and disciplined.
  • Comfortable working at pace.
  • Strong with follow-up.
  • Able to work without constant supervision.
  • Calm under pressure.
  • Willing to support colleagues.
  • Focused on getting the right outcome for the customer and the business.

You must be comfortable in a fast-moving SME environment where standards are high, accountability matters and customers expect prompt, accurate responses.

Essential Experience

Applicants must be able to demonstrate:

  • Strong experience in the pump industry or a very closely related technical sector.
  • The ability to understand pump applications and select suitable products.
  • Experience handling technical sales enquiries.
  • Experience producing quotations for pumps, pumping equipment or related mechanical products.
  • Good understanding of customer applications, not just product codes.
  • Strong communication skills by phone and email.
  • Commercial awareness around margin, pricing, upsell and product suitability.
  • Ability to work accurately in a busy sales environment.
  • Confidence using CRM, quotation systems or similar sales/admin platforms.

Desirable Experience

It would be advantageous if you have experience with any of the following:

  • Tsurumi, Ebara, Flygt, Grindex, Caprari, DAB, Lowara, Grundfos, Pedrollo, Zenit, JS, Koshin or similar pump brands.
  • Construction, civils, utilities, drainage or wastewater sectors.
  • Pump stations or packaged pump systems.
  • Control panels, float switches, level sensors or pump automation.
  • Borehole, booster, sewage, drainage or site dewatering applications.
  • Trade counter, distributor, manufacturer or hire industry experience.
  • Reading pump curves, datasheets or technical specifications.
  • Working with contractors, facilities managers, councils, farms, utilities, engineers or domestic customers.

This Role Is NOT Suitable For Someone Who…

  • Is looking for an entry-level sales role.
  • Has no real pump or pumping system experience.
  • Needs months of basic product training before becoming useful.
  • Is uncomfortable handling technical enquiries.
  • Cannot work at pace.
  • Avoids following up quotations.
  • Focuses only on turnover and ignores margin.
  • Struggles with accuracy.
  • Does not like using CRM systems.
  • Wants a slow-moving corporate environment.
  • Is not confident speaking directly with customers.

This is a role for someone who already understands the pump industry and wants to apply that knowledge in a growing specialist business.

  • Support the development of higher-value pump solutions.
  • Strengthen the technical capability of the sales team.
  • Build trust with repeat trade and commercial customers.

  • Help Henry Pumps continue to grow as a specialist pump supplier.
